Elrond’s departure from Middle-earth was by far more excruciating than Frodo’s, because of who he had left behind, but in his mood Frodo paid Elrond no mind. Had anyone noticed, they would have seen his knuckles were white as they grasped the railing his mind in turmoil. He likewise had his gaze fixed steadfastly on the receding shoreline. ![]() Frodo knew he would never see his other friends again, and it saddened him.Įlrond nearby also wore a grave expression, though no one noticed it. It comforted him to know that someday the final Ring-bearer may come over the sea, but that wasn’t a certainty, and anyway it could be many years. Most of all he missed Sam, his best friend. He felt oddly nostalgic now about Middle-earth and especially for the Shire, lands and people for which he had suffered and sacrificed so much. He was leaving his home, friends, and everything he had ever known behind for an uncertain future. But the threat of annihilation or domination by the Enemy was ended forever, and in any case the fate of Middle-earth was in the hands of men now, and the elves gave little thought to it in their rejoicing.įrodo, however, did not feel much like rejoicing at the moment. Also he had many servants and slaves, and many of these yet lived in the deep places. Yet trouble would always find the men of Middle-earth, because the lies and treachery Morgoth had sewn could never fully be eradicated, and men would always find reason to strive with one another. Not that many had played much of a role in the War of the Ring, but they left Middle-earth knowing that the last great servant of Morgoth was overthrown, and it seemed that for the first time since the world was made that there was no Enemy to resist.Īnd so it was. For they were returning to their rightful home in the West, and alone of all the race of Elves they were returning victoriously. The Elves were joyful as joyful as many had ever been, and for the High Elves as joyful as they had been since they came to Middle-earth. ![]() Many of the Elves on board were forward, near the bow singing gladly or leaning on the bulwark, delighting in the sea air and spray. Frodo and Bilbo stood with Gandalf and Elrond on the stern of the great white ship facing east as Middle-earth slowly faded from sight. ![]()
